Obama dinner menu

Take a look at this beautifully designed menu by Bill Hall and look at what they ate at the $7500. per person Obama dinner on the east side of Providence last week. Johnny Chace tried to keep the menu mostly locally grown. Mr. Obama concluded his remarks at about 7:30pm, saying he couldn’t stay for dinner. “I’ve got to go home to tuck in the girls and walk the dog and scoop the poop,” he said.
The lobster came from Andrades Catch in Bristol on Wood Street. Grass fed beef from Aquidneck Farms in Portsmouth. Veggies from Southside Community Land Trust in Providence, potatoes from Maplewood Farms in Portsmouth. Wine from Sakonnet Vineyards in LIttle Compton.

Buy Local: RI Digs Potatoes!

Keep you eyes peeled in the supermarket for locally grown potatoes called RI ROYAL POTATOES. They come from three farms in Portsmouth and one farm each in Little Compton, Tiverton and Westport. The potato co-op is modeling themselves on Rhody Fresh Milk!

If you struggle with leaf bags, there's a new product called a leaf funnel or a bag funnel. It keeps the bags open and upright... and is even fun for kids to crawl through. Check out the video. Most garden centers carry them.

Apple Computer's John Sculley on Steve Jobs

This is a long essay by John Sculley about his colleague Steve Jobs.
Sculley became the CEO of Apple when Jobs was voted out by the Board
of Directors. Sculley didn't know a thing about computers. What
attracted Steve Jobs to Sculley was his interest in Industrial Design
- not computers.

"Steve from the moment I met him always loved beautiful products,
especially hardware. He came to my house and he was fascinated
because I had special hinges and locks designed for doors.
I had studied as an industrial designer and the thing that conmected
Steve and me was industrial design. It wasn't computing.
I didn't know really anything about computers nor did any
other people in the world at that time." John Sculley

After reading this you get a good idea of how Apple products
came to be and how attention to detail and beauty was
all important no matter the cost!

Nine East Bay Towns Moving Forward with wind-farm plan

Providence Journal
Sunday, October 17, 2010
by Alex Kuffner
The concept for the wind farm was hatched early last year during a leadership conference at Roger Williams University in which East Bay officials discussed ways they could collaborate to save taxpayer money. One idea presented at the event was to jointly explore green energy options.
It is exciting to read that The Renewable Energy Fund, which is managed by the state Economic Development Corporation, awarded another $335,000 grant last month that will pay for a meteorological tower to collect wind data and will also go toward more detailed studies of permitting issues, governing structures for the consortium and financing options, including the availability of state and federal funds.

Raytheon Water Tower Gone: The passing of an era!

All of you boaters out there probably noticed as I did recently that the 150' Raytheon Water Tower is no longer there! The landmark tower was removed for cost reasons.
The maintenance, preservation, etc far exceeded its utility for fire fighting, that was no longer needed due to updated systems.

PORTSMOUTH — The Portsmouth skyline lost a landmark recently when Raytheon cut down its water tower.
Heavy equipment made short work of the 150-foot white tower with the Raytheon logo on top.

Working with a crane, crews removed the top and then worked their way down, all in one day — Saturday, Sept. 18. The sections were cut apart with acetylene torches and the metal was trucked away.

Raytheon spokesman Nick Garrison said the tower was erected in 1960 to provide fire protection for the new Raytheon Submarine Warfare Center (it’s now called Raytheon Seapower Capability Center). The tower’s tank held 100,000 gallons of water.

Recently, however, improvements to water supply lines into Raytheon made the tower unnecessary and it was decided to drain the tower and take it down to save money needed for maintenance.

Saving website addresses for easy access

Want to save a website's URL for later reading but don't want to add it to your bookmarks? Just drag the "favicon" (the little graphic image to the left of the site's address) into your Dock (usually at the bottom of your Mac's screen). You'll see a tiny @ sign on a spring to indicate the link is stored in the Dock. OR if you use a PC just drag it to your desktop.

Choosing a mate and selecting a chair!

Selecting a life partner is a lot like choosing a chair, says Ayca Cakmakli. We want our partnerships with people to last a long time and regularly they do – even though it can be difficult to know up front how well a person really meets any of our selection criteria. Some of her criteria include: attractiveness, trustworthiness, exciting...

Providence to take container cargo

After rejecting an initial application, the U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded the port of Providence $10.5 million to replace outdated cranes. The money will pay to replace two cranes built in 1979. The new cranes will expand the port’s ability to unload bulk material and, for the first time, allow the port to unload cargo containers. Currently, the Port of Boston is the only port in New England with such capability, according to elected officials. The delegation said that the project is estimated to remove on average of 1,000 trucks per week off the Northeast corridor highway system.http://www.pbn.com/Port-of-Providence-receives-10-million-for-new-cranes,53176

MHF Community Day was a success!

Community Day was a grand success, well attended and lots of fun. The ponds
were even replenished with water after all the rain earlier in the week.
A group of local Pokanokets were at the monument and the spring - open just for the day.
Jazz was played by the Mount Hope High School Jazz Combo at Cove Cabin.
Audubon brought a barred owl.
The House Tour had over 200 people and MG thought about 425 people attended.
KIds had a ball with the scavenger hunt and the good food from Leo's.
The RI Regiment raised the flag around noon and then everyone went into the house for the tour! The day was blessed with fantastic weather! A group working on the greenhouse were also on hand to share
their plans and sell pumpkins..All in all a wonderful welcoming gathering!
